Notices

CENTENNIAL WEB SITE - As you know, Scripps Institution of Oceanography is gearing up to celebrate its 100th birthday, officially kicking off in September 2002 and continuing through December 2003. Our 100th birthday is September 26, 2003. A Centennial Web site has been developed to publicize and educate the world on the significance of our 100-year history. Please visit this Web site to explore Scripps's rich history and to learn about the plans for our Centennial celebrations. The Web site features a Centennial events calendar, history of Scripps, and more. It will continue to be updated with Centennial happenings through the months, so tune in often! DAVIS CHALLENGE MATCH COMPLETE - The SIO Development Office has raised the necessary funds to match on a dollar-for-dollar basis the generous challenge from the Shelia Marie Davis Fund of the San Diego Foundation to contribute $250,000 towards the Robert Paine Scripps Center. Many thanks to Shelia Davis, and to all the generous friends, faculty, staff and Scripps family members who rose to the challenge! (Edwina Riblet)

OPEN HOUSE FOR PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENTS -The tenth annual Open House for prospective graduate students will be held Thursday, March 14 through Saturday, March 16. This year, the Kaplans have made an additional pledge of $150,000. In recognition of their outstanding generosity, the patio area in front of the entrance to the Robert Paine Scripps Center will be named the Maurice and Charmaine Kaplan Patio.

THE 7TH ANNUAL ROGER E. CARPENTER LECTURE IN COMPARATIVE BIOLOGY -Gerald L. Kooyman, SIO, will present "Emperor Penguins: Going for the Gold of Extreme Adaptations: Diving, Flying, and Fasting" on March 11, in Hardy Tower Room 140 at 4 p.m. on the San Diego State University campus. The Roger E. Carpenter Lectureship was established to support an annual lecture by a distinguished biologist whose research perspective is integrative and highlights major patterns and unifying themes in comparative biology.

Ship News

MELVILLE, 2002-25-02 Chief Scientist Report #4 - Ship's Position 46 degrees, 2 minutes south, 177 degrees, 1 minutes east. This last week was a big one. We departed the Southern Patch station and left the USCG Icebreaker Polar Star on site to follow up some observations that both Revelle and Melville had initiated. The major finding of the Southern Patch experiment is that iron deficiency does limit phytoplankton growth, the production of biomass, the uptake of major plant nutrients and the draw down of carbon dioxide in high silicate Southern Ocean waters. Although the magnitude of the carbon exported requires a greater analysis than is possible here, the effect of iron on growth is unequivocal. Following some extensive mapping and profiling efforts, Melville transited to the Northern Patch to revisit an experiment initiated some 38 days prior. The North Patch experiment had advected to the northeast where it was found run up against a front. The patch itself was drawn into a filament perhaps 5 km by 150 km wide and as such was difficult to map in it's entirety. Portions of the patch that had been pinched off were extensively mapped and sampled at a vertical profile station. This station revealed that a significant portion of the patch had been overrun by warmer waters whereas the major portion of high SF6 and chlorophyll was at depth (about 30-40m). Subsequent sampling of this strata indicated that biological production was still high relative to layers above and below. Due to an approaching storm, and the long transit to Lyttelton, Melville left the North Patch station at 0420 (local) and have been steaming for the last 3 days heading 306. The ride has been acceptable but rough at times as we quarter the swell from a local gale and are now taking in on our port quarter. Scientists are busy packing their gear (as much as they can and still have secure) and are wrapping up their shipboard data analysis. The port call will be busy. There will be considerable engine work, deck work and lots of moving of scientific gear. We are trying to anticipate this and get as much of the science gear packed as possible to facilitate the offload in Lyttelton. This has been a very productive trip and we look forward to sailing on Melville in the future. (Kenneth Coale, Chief Scientist)
