CONGRATULATIONS! The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has awarded Dick Seymour, a research engineer in the Center for Coastal Studies, the 2000 John G. Moffatt - Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award. The award is one of only two medals ASCE grants annually in the field of coastal engineering. The award recognizes new ideas and concepts that can be efficiently implemented to expand the engineering or construction techniques available for harbor and coastal projects. Dick received the award in December at the Carbonate Beaches 2000 Conference in Key Largo, Fl. He was cited "for his significant engineering contributions (research, teaching, design, and management) for many years in coastal sediment transport, and wave measurement analysis." Also, the ASCE recently elevated Dick to fellow. Congratulations! (SIO Communications, x43624)

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Ed Renger is retiring after 38 years. Join us at the Martin Johnson House on Friday, Feb. 16 between 1500-1800 and help us give him the rowdy send off that he deserves. To help him remember us, please lend your favorite Ed photos (the more embarrassing the better) and your politically incorrect jokes to Sherry Cummings (x46780), Jim Wilkinson or Dave Wohlgast (both x20674). (Elizabeth Venrick, evenrick@ucsd.edu)

CROSS-CULTURAL CENTER WINTER MINI-CONFERENCE - UCSD's Cross-Cultural Center, along with the Ethnic Studies Department, Associated Students University Events Office, and the UCSD Programming Council, will host its annual mini-conference, "Intersections", from February 8-15, with a variety of events and exhibits held throughout the week. The overall aim is to examine historical examples of multicultural social movements, and to refute the idea that social movements affect and involve only certain groups of people. An art exhibit integrating the main goals of the conference will be on display throughout the week for public viewing. For more information, contact the Cross-Cultural Center at (858)534-9689 or at cccenter@ucsd.edu. For a copy of event schedule, contact Lupe Cook, lcook@ucsd.edu.

UNITED WAY/CHAD - UCSD will kick off its annual United Way/CHAD campaign with a rally on Valentine's Day, Wednesday, February 14. All staff, faculty, and students are invited to attend the kickoff, 11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. at the Sun God lawn. Food and drinks will be available, as well as information about the campaign, and raffle prizes will be given away throughout the event. The 2001 campaign at UCSD will run from February 14 through March 17, and provide students, faculty, and staff with an opportunity to make donations through payroll deductions, check, or credit card to support nearly 200 local community agencies. Donors may specify a particular organization to receive their gift or make a general contribution to the fund. For general information or to request a pledge form, please contact Kim Ayoub or Patricia Pieper at x44604.
