Ship News Melville Cook Expedition Leg 16 - Weekly Science Report, Wednesday, December 19, 2001 - As we approach the holiday season, we are thankful for the good cheer on board the Melville and for the opportunity to be accomplishing some exciting science. Captain Murline and the crew have been tremendous, and the technical group of Bob Wilson, Seth Mogk and John Chatwood have worked long and hard to make sure the gathering of data went as smoothly as possible. This week we have successfully brought back and recovered all the ocean bottom seismometers that were deployed in two microearthquake arrays and have begun re-deploying them in another larger array for our long-term monitoring of distant earthquakes. Dredges and mapping suggest that some of our initial guesses at the age relationships between different sets of seamounts and volcanic ridge are incorrect. Of course, further analysis of the rocks on land will be required to confirm these impressions. In our off-hours, we have begun to organize a quoits tournament. As always, we greatly appreciate the efforts of Dan Englebrecht and Jay Erickson in preparing such fantastic meals.
