NEW, COOL MULTIMEDIA SHOW- There is something new to see at the aquarium's kelp tank these days--"Ghost Forest," a 5-minute multimedia show! The term "ghost forest" was a term coined by the late Mia Tegner and Paul Dayton to characterize the sharp decline in size and abundance of the megafauna in our local kelp forests. Paul and Mia's research has been incorporated into a compelling multimedia presentation that plays every 15 minutes in the kelp tank area. The show begins with a nostalgic look back (by our very own Diving Officer Emeritus Jim Stewart) at the abundance and immense size of marine life that once flourished in coastal waters, then addresses the drastic reduction of the kelp forest's megafauna, examining the reasons. Also this excellent show describes current methods of marine resource management, and introduces a science-based strategy for improving ocean management that includes the creation of a network of areas where entire ecosystems are completely protected from resource extraction of any kind. These protected areas are called marine reserves. "Ghost Forest" was made possible by a grant from the Kenneth T. & Eileen L. Norris Foundation and is dedicated to our dear friend, world-class kelp forest ecologist, and inspiring ocean advocate, Mia Tegner, who served as an advisor on the exhibit. Paul Dayton was also very instrumental in the development of this piece, and we are extremely grateful for his guidance. Come and see us! (Debbie Zmarzly, x44087)

SCRIPPS IN THE NEWS 2001! - News! Food! Drop by room 114 in the Scripps Administration Building on Thursday, December 6 anytime between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for a tasty selection of news and food. SCRIPPS HOLIDAY PARTY: Mark your calendars to bring your family to this year's Holiday Party, Friday, December 21, 5 pm, at the Birch Aquarium. Food and beverages. Bring some goodies to share! Music and dancing! Door prizes! And, as an early Centennial idea, build a little gingerbread Scripps Cottage for display at the party! An esteemed panel of judges will award prizes for best detail, most alike, and other categories. For directions and rules, go to the Web site http://scripps100.ucsd.edu/t-buildings/. Also, in the past some children have become rather unruly.....they are certainly welcome, but it'd be super if you'd please look after them. (Jill Hammons, x43948)

WAY TO GO, ROSE & LIZ! Rose Dufour and Liz Brenner, SIO Ship Scheduling, are featured on the Web site "Remarkable Careers in Oceanography." Check them out at http://www.womenoceanographers.org/doc/RDufour/roseintro.htm.

ChiPS 3RD ANNUAL FOOD & CLOTHING DRIVE - It's time to clean out your closets for the 3rd Annual CHiPS Food and Clothing Drive, November 28 - December 7. Last year we collected over 2,000 items!! Stay tuned for details on locations to place items (it will be a building near you). Items accepted will be new and used men's, women's, and children's clothing. Toys maybe used; if new, please don't gift wrap. Non perishable food, new household cleaners, and new female cosmetics will be accepted. Used costume jewelry, baby items, household goods are also great. Please make sure everything is in good condition. Your generous donations will be given to three shelters. December 7 will culminate the drive at a Surfside TG. Thank you!! P.S. If you absolutely have to donate items before November 28, contact us for the drop off location. Weekly Science Report, Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - For the last week, we have been dredging basaltic rocks and deploying ocean-bottom seismometers along the series of volcanic ridges and seamounts that culminate in the Matua seamount. The rocks dredged from the outlying parts of the complex have been older and coated with a thick, manganese crust. Near Matua itself, where the seafloor is highly reflective on side-scan sonar, the rocks have been much younger, with glass rims on fragments of pillow basalts and sheet flows. Everyone on deck burst into spontaneous applause at one dredge that came up with about 100 kilograms of "popping" rocks that crackled and popped on deck from the expansion of gases trapped in vesicles. There are indications that some of the basalts are highly enriched, suggesting that the magma that formed them originated from very small degrees of melting or from unusually enriched mantle associated with the hotspots of the Pacific superswell. We have successfully deployed nine ocean-bottom seismometers so far in two small arrays. They will be listening for microearthquakes for the next three to four weeks, before we pick them up and redeploy them for a long-term tomographic study of the mantle. The crew and technical staff have been wonderfully helpful and supportive. The food has been so good that we are all wondering how the cooks can outdo themselves for tomorrow's Thanksgiving dinner. Yesterday, we dined on a freshly caught, 60-lb wahoo. (Chief Scientist, Don Forsyth)

Weekly Report #2 from the R/V Revelle 2359 GMT 20 November 2001 - Map, dredge, eat, sleep. Map, dredge, eat, sleep. Sometimes, rocks. Sometimes, not. Sandwell and Smith "predicted bathymetry" (altimetry) data very useful. Weather calm and cloudy. Resident Technician, Eugene Pillard, working round and round the clock. Celebrated his 20th anniversary as an employee of MarFac/SIO. Looking forward to our Thanksgiving Feast and Surf Bowl. Food still fantastic. Ship support still superb as we test hotspot and mantle convection models by mapping, dredging, etc., to Rapa Nui. (David Naar, USF; Kevin Johnson, Bishop Museum; Doug Pyle, OSU; Paul Wessel, UH)
