SIO HOLIDAY PARTY - The SIO Ho, Ho, Holiday Party for Scripps staff,
faculty, students, and retirees will be held on ***Wednesday,

gift to you all this year, the incredible Japanese Shoken Ji Taiko
Drummers--that heartstopping performance that stunned guests at the
Kyoto Prize Celebration--will perform for you all! And, back by
popular demand is "Benny Hollman & the Velvetones" for your dancing
pleasure! Santa, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and his Elfette
helper will be there as well. And, don't forget the ever-popular
raffle! So, get into the holiday spirit and plan to come to this
great event! (Jill Ives Claus, x43948)

JIM STEWART DIVES INTO THE SCUBA HALL OF HONOR - Jim Stewart, diving
officer emeritus at Scripps, was one of the initial inductees into
the NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors) Hall of
Honor. At a special awards ceremony held during NAUI's 40th
Anniversary Reunion this week in Houston, Stewart joined 21 other
scuba pioneers who were honored for their countless hours of
volunteer labor and valuable contributions to the field of scuba
diving. Jim has been associated with Scripps since 1952. As diving
officer from 1960 until his retirement in 1991, he managed the
nation's oldest and largest nongovernmental research diving program
which became the model for safe and effective conduct of
international research diving programs. He remains active in our
Scripps diving program. We're very proud of you, Jim! (SIO
Communications, x43624)

YOU IN THE NEWS - Join your SIO pals on December 14 for "Scripps In
the News 2000," a showcase of SIO's worldwide news coverage. Drop
by 114 Scripps Building any time throughout the day for delicious
snacks and drinks, and an opportunity to see the TV, magazine, and
newspaper clips about you & SIO from 2000. Don't miss this chance to
sink your teeth into festive food and hearty headlines! (Scripps
Communications Office, x43624)

NSF AWARDS $2.54 MILLION GRANT - The National Science Foundation has
awarded a $2.54 million, five-year research grant to UCSD/SIO through
the Environmental Molecular Science Institutes (EMSI) and
Collaborative Research Activities in Environmental Molecular Science
(CRAEMS) Program to investigate the bioinorganic and environmental
chemistry of bacterial mineralization of manganese oxides. The
project, under the direction of Brad Tebo of MBRD/CMBB and
co-directed by Tom Spiro (Princeton), Gary Sposito (UC Berkeley), and
John Bargar (Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory), brings
together an interdisciplinary group of four investigators having a
unique blend of microbiological, bioinorganic, spectroscopic, and
surface science perspectives on the issues of how bacteria oxidize
manganese, how the resulting manganese oxides influence the chemistry
of other metals in both terrestrial and marine environments, and how
they affect chemical and biochemical degradation of natural and
xenobiotic organic molecules. The project is expected to produce a
comprehensive view of manganese oxidation as it occurs in natural
systems, including its environmental significance in terrestrial and
marine environments.

ITRAX XRF MICROSCOPE DEMONSTRATION - Cox Analytical Systems (Sweden)
and SIO invite you to a demonstration of the new Itrax CXRF
microscope for elemental and density analysis. Two demos will be
held in a location to be announced later on Wednesday, December
6.....one at 10 a.m. and one at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
Please RSVP to Kevin Walda, kwalda@ucsd.edu, x43558.

BAS ON KPBS - A few months ago, Huell Howser, host of PBS's
"California Gold", made a visit to the aquarium. This program will
air on PBS on Thursday, November 30 at 8 p.m. The aquarium is
featured toward the end of the hour. Mark your calendars!
