UCSD 40TH ANNIVERSARY -- UCSD is celebrating its 40th anniversary with
a
year-long series of special events. UCSD will demonstrate the years
of growth in quality, strength, and breadth since Roger Revelle,
considered the "father" of UCSD, envisioned an educational and research
mecca rising from a dusty La Jolla mesa. A major focus of the celebration
will be 40 "gifts" of service to the communities of San Diego County.
In
a variety of ways, the campus will feature more than 300 activities and
programs that UCSD currently provides throughout the area. For more info,
visit the web site:http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/calendar/40th/default.asp.(Scripps

Ship News
Ship News R/V Melville, Weekly Scientific Report, 30 October 2000: We
have
completed our second survey, of part of the Anti-Bauer Scarp, and are
transiting to Tahiti. Corresponding offsets and fracture zone traces at
both Bauer and Anti-Bauer scarps allow for an accurate alignment of the
conjugate margins (now separated by ~1000 km of younger EPR). The two
scarps exhibit a marked asymmetry with Bauer having steep fault scarps
(reactivated abyssal hill faults) facing the modern EPR ridge crest, while
Anti-Bauer has a much gentler slope into its bounding trough (without
significant abyssal hill reactiviation). The principal conclusion is that
rifting to form the scarps was along a westward-dipping master fault with
Bauer Scarp representing the footwall and Anti-Bauer the hangingwall.
We
have also successfully deployed a third oceanographic float and will launch
three more as we transit to Tahiti. (B. Eakins, UCSD/SIO)
CalCOFI 0010NH Scientific Report 30 Oct 2000 - CalCOFI 0010NH has ended
with the completion of all 66 standard stations. On our homeward transit,
Catherine Johnson will complete 4 more Mocness tows for a total of 14.
Sta
87.70 was redone because of a torn net. The weather for the last week
has
greatly improved much to the relief of the scientists and crew. The
gale-force winds forecasted never materialized. Comparison of 10m
temperatures to 50yr mean values continue to show this season's condition
are normal, except for some anomalously cool water off Pt Conception
indicating late season upwelling. Green water and euphausid-filled
cod-ends support this impression. The Optical Plankton Counter (OPC) has
operated at 100% over the entire cruise. Data have been collected for
all
stations except one where nets were cancelled due to foul weather. The
MOCNESS is once again operational after weather-related damage was
repaired, and four additional tows, at Santa Cruz Basin, Santa Barbara
Basin, and CalCOFI stations 83.60 and 80.60, have been made. Very high
numbers of the copepod Calanus pacificus, presumed to be dormant, were
collected in Santa Barbara Basin at 25 m above the sill depth of 475 m.
The
uncharacteristically bad weather for this year's October outing made Tim
Nightigale's radiometric measurement very difficult. The almost constant
cloud cover meant little validation work could be done. In addition, the
heavy swell caused problems with disturbed water in the SISTeR's field
of
view. Nonetheless, the SISTeR and SOAP recorded skin and bulk temperatures
nearly continuously throughout the cruise. Bird and marine mammal
observations for this last week include one of the strangest sightings,
a
juvenile Peregrine Falcon that followed the boat nearly 200 miles off
Pt.
Conception. A Red-tailed Tropicbird and a Red-billed Tropicbird were also
seen in that area. A Sabine's Gull was recorded offshore, along with large
numbers of phalaropes. Many groups of loons were seen flying south in
the
nearshore waters off Pt. Conception. Marine mammals noted include Common
Dolphins, Dall's Porpoise, Bottlenose Dolphins, and Fin Whales. The
fishermen have brought several more 20-40lbs albacore onboard.
Anticipation is high for tomorrow's run south through 18degC waters but
we
all hope we can do our trick or treating on the beach. (Jim Wilkinson)
