In Memoriam

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of a long time friend of
MPL and SIO.  Mildred Rogers was 86 when she passed away a few weeks ago.
Mildred came to work for SIO starting as Dr. Roger Revelle's secretary on
July 28, 1952. After four years, she joined the Marine Physical Laboratory
as Dr. Fred Spiess' secretary, and from 1966-1977 she worked directly under
Dr. George Shor as our Sverdrup Hall secretary.  She retired September 30,
1977, after 25 years of service to SIO/UCSD, and enjoyed her retirement
immensely.  She was a frequent attendee at our MPL Christmas parties and we
last saw her at Fred Spiess' 80th birthday party.  There was never a dull
moment with Mildred around as she would spark up a conversation and talk
for hours. We will greatly miss her.

Calendar

Friday, October 13

MARINE BIOLOGY SEMINAR - Rick Harrison, Cornell University, will present
"Hybrid Zones, Hybridization, and the Genetic Architecture of Speciation,
or  'How I Dared Give a Talk on Friday the 13th'" in 4500 Hubbs Hall at 12
noon.  (Brian Palenik, bpalenik@ucsd.edu)

UNDERWATER ARCHEOLOGY FILM - You are invited to an informal sneak preview
of a new film on underwater archeology.  The film, "Lost Ships of the
Mediterranean,"  focuses on the work of several people, including Bob
Ballard.   The film was made off the coast of Israel, and covers the
location and uncovering of a pair of 1500-year Phoenician ships.  This will
be featured in the January 2001 National Geographic. The film is unique in
that it connects the ships directly to related archeology projects on the
shore in Israel.  Bill Broughton, who has worked with the surface
archeology project in Israel, will be here to introduce the film and answer
some questions.   The tape will be shown 114 Scripps Building at 12 noon.
The only caveat is that no recording devises will be allowed in the room
and Bob warns everyone that he will be talking "informally."  (Kirk
Gardner, 21865)

Wednesday, October 18

ECOLOGY LUNCHEON SEMINAR - (Note different location!) Tim Gerrodette,
Southwest Fisheries Science Center will present "Precautionary Fisheries
Management: the Roles of Science and Policy" in 10 Old Scripps Building at
12:15 p.m. (Bonnie Becker, bjbecker@ucsd.edu)

Thursday, October 19

AOS SEMINAR -  Clint Winant will present "Coastal Circulation" and Ed Dever
will present "Wind Events and Shelf Transport (WEST) Project Funded Under
the NSF Coastal Ocean Processes (CoOP) Initiative"  in 330 NTV Building at
4 p.m.

MSPPC MEETING - The October meeting of the Marine Sciences Physical
Planning Committee (MSPPC) will be held from 10 a.m to 11:30 a.m. in 114
Scripps Building.  Action will be taken on the CAS instrument tower
proposal and commemorative bench installations.  If you have any questions,
please contact wither Cathy Presmyk (x43860) or Jonathan Berger (x42889).

WELCOME, RUSS!  The California Sea Grant staff are pleased to welcome their
new Director, Dr. Russell Moll, to the SIO campus.  In order to introduce
him to the broader SIO community, you are cordially invited to join us
between 3 and 6 p.m. for an informal reception in the Old Director's House
(T-16).  Please come and meet Russ, see the historic renovation of the Old
Director's House on the inside, and learn a bit about the Sea Grant
program.  Refreshments will be served. If you missed the announcement last
June about his selection, there is a brief biography of Russ on the
California Sea Grant web site at
http://www-csgc.ucsd.edu/admin/russmoll.html. Please join us!

Friday, October 20

MARINE BIOLOGY SEMINAR - Colin Brauner, SDSU, will present "O2 and CO2
Interactions in Fish During Exercise and Hypoxia" in 4500 Hubbs Hall at 12

JEFF SEVERINGHAUS WINS PACKARD FELLOWSHIP - Jeff Severinghaus, an Associate
Professor in the SIO Graduate Department,  has been awarded a David and
Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship to pursue  his research in rapid
climate change over the next five years. These  fellowships are among the
most prestigious and well-funded awards for  younger faculty members at US
universities. Congratulations Jeff!

ATTENTION: MEMBERS OF THE SIO STAFF COUNCIL - The Fall 2000 meeting of the
SIO Staff Council is scheduled for  Tuesday, October 31 at 12 noon in
Sumner Auditorium. An election will  be held for two positions: Staff
Council Secretary and one member of  the Committee on Committees. Ballots
will be sent via campus mail to  all members of the Staff Council. Other
communications concerning the  meeting will be done via the SIO Log and the
Web at http://www.sio.ucsd.edu/sio_only/supp_groups/staffcouncil. If you
have questions, comments, or items for the agenda, please send your e-mail
to areisner@ucsd.edu.

HAUNTED PIER - All are invited for a hauntingly good time on Scripps Pier,
Sunday, Oct. 29, 6:00-9:00 p.m.  Trick or Treat your way down the pier
while listening to spooky tales of pirates, ships lost at sea, and other
ghostly and ghastly maritime stories.  Interact with Scripps's own mad
scientists, marine monsters of the deep, and animals that glow in the dark.
Also, find out why some animals are considered "ghosts" of the sea.   Don't
forget to enter our marine-themed costume contest starting at 7 p.m!
Shuttle service to the Pier will be provided from the Birch Aquarium
parking lot.  Fee for Haunted Pier is $8, and is open to all ages.  Advance
registration is required.  For registration or more information, please
call the Birch Aquarium at Scripps at 858/534-7336.  (SIO Communications,

TRICK OR TREAT! - All buoys and ghouls and their parents are invited to the
second annual Halloween Party for SIO Kids, on Tuesday, October 31. Creep
on down to the grassy area beside the Snack Bar at 4 p.m.  and enjoy goblin
goodies and bewitching prizes for the best kids' costumes. (Sharon Franks,

FAIRS Experiment on R/P FLIP - The third week of the FAIRS experiment was
one of high wind and waves.  The wind speed was above 25 knots, gusting to
35 and the seas were 8-12 feet. The rough weather conditions provided an
ideal opportunity to make simultaneous remote sensing and sub-surface
turbulence measurements of breaking waves.  The rough weather persisted
long enough to delay the scheduled crew transfer by 4 days.  Today the wind
is low and the seas are calm and the crew transfer occurred without
incident.  The large-scale breaking waves were big enough to fill the
footprint of the passive microwave sensors, providing a good comparison
with the foam-generating raft measurements made under calm conditions.

R/V Revelle - NEMO04RV Weekly Scientific Report - 10/06/00 - After leaving
Honolulu at 1730, the Revelle headed for French Frigate Shoals.  We plan to
work there for about 8 days, spanning neap to spring tides.  Numerical
simulations by Merrifield et al. show the largest fluxes of M2 internal
tides emanating from the shoals.  We will take day-long stations over the
ridge crest, the slope and offshore to the south to examine how much
dissipation accompanies the elevated shear and displacements observed last
month by Rudnick and Pinkel.  Tom Sanford on Wecoma will join us several
days after we arrive. We stopped this morning to test our microstructure
profilers and will make several more stops for further testing today and
tomorrow.
(Mike Gregg/UW )

R/V Melville, Weekly Scientific Report, 10/3/00, Cook 02: XBT (every 30
minutes of time) section from off Arica, Chile to 85.0W, 20.0N completed.
Bottom surveyed to locate mooring site, and surface mooring deployed.
Intercomparisons between shipboard and buoy IMET systems completed. Mooring
on station and performing well.   CTD station made at mooring site to begin
XBT/CTD section back along 20.0S toward Arica across part of Peru Basin and
across the northern end of the Chile Basin.  Deep CTD stations every degree
of longitude, with water collected for nutrients and chemistry, to be taken
until just of Chile.  (Bob Weller, WHOI, Chief Scientist)
