STAR OF INDIA CELEBRATES 138TH BIRTHDAY -The venerable Star of India, San Diego's great waterfront icon, a National Historic Landmark, and the oldest active ship in the world, will celebrate her 138th birthday, November 10, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The public is invited to help celebrate Star's birthday by visiting the tall ship at a special 2-for-1 admission throughout the day. Festivities will include musical sea chanteys, sail handling demonstrations (visitors actually set the great sails), scrimshaw carving, and knot-tying demonstrations. Door prizes will be given out and refreshments will be served. Anyone wearing period British clothing (circa 1863) will be admitted free. There is metered parking throughout the day, and admission to Star of India's birthday party includes a visit to the new exhibits, and a tour of all three historic ships. Star of India was launched in Ramsey, Isle of Man, on November 14, 1863, just five days before Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address an ocean away. She has been around the world 21 times, carrying up to 500 emigrants from England to New Zealand in search of a new land, a new hope, and a new life. The Maritime Museum is located at North Harbor Drive at Ash Street along the Embarcadero. This event is sponsored by the Star of India Auxiliary, and made possible with assistance from the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the Port of San Diego.
