Calendar
Friday, September 29
MARINE BIOLOGY SEMINAR - Sarka Southern, SW Fisheries Science Center,
will
present "Molecular Analysis of Stress Response in Dolphins and Whales:
New
Techniques for Monitoring Environmental Stress" in 4500 Hubbs Hall at
12
noon. (Brian Palenik, x47505)
DOCTORAL DISSERTATION DEFENSE - Jana Davis will defend her doctoral
dissertation entitled "Temporal and Spatial Dynamics of a Tidepool Fish
Assemblage in San Diego, California" in 4500 Hubbs Hall at 2:00 p.m.
The public is invited (Tanya Levi, tlevi@ucsd.edu)
GEOPHYSICS SEMINAR - Toshiro Tanimoto, UC Santa Barbara, will present
"Gravitational Energy Change by Earthquakes" in IGPP Munk Lab Conference
Room at 3 p.m., refreshments at 2:45 p.m. (Bridget Smith,
bsmith@mahi.ucsd.edu)
Sunday, October 1
LECTURE AND BOOK SIGNING - Join Christopher Wills, professor of biology
at
UCSD, and Jeffrey Bada, professor of marine chemistry at Scripps, on Oct.
1
in the Birch Aquarium classroom as they discuss the engaging issues brought
to light in their new book, "The Spark of Life: Darwin and the Primeval
Soup." The lecture and book signing event begins at 2 p.m. How did life
originate on Earth? What did the earliest primitive organisms look like?
Were they based on RNA, DNA, or on something we would hardly recognize
today? Is there life elsewhere in the universe? During the lively
presentation and discussion on the origin of life, Wills and Bada will
describe the steps by which living organisms first appeared, and show
how,
right from the beginning, the forces of evolution were at work. The lecture
includes demonstrations of origin-of-life experiments. (Mario Aguilera,
x43626)
Tuesday, October 3
CRD SEMINAR - Huijun Yang, College of Marine Sciences, University of
South
Florida, St. Petersburg, FL, will present "A Unified Theory for Ocean
Climate Variability" in 101 Nierenberg Hall at 3:30 p.m. Refreshments
will
be served at 3:15 p.m. The seminar is sponsored by the Climate Research
Division. (Carolyn Baxter, x46584)
Wednesday, October 4
ECOLOGY LUNCHEON SEMINAR - Mark Ohman, SIO, will present "Nonlinear
Zooplankton Population Dynamics: A Perspective on the North Atlantic"
in
4500 Hubbs Hall at 12:15 p.m. (Bonnie Becker, bjbecker@ucsd.edu)
Friday, October 6
MARINE BIOLOGY SEMINAR - (Please note different location!) David
Valentine, UCSD, will present a topic to be announced in 10 Old Scripps
Building at 12 noon. (Brian Palenik, x47505)
SPECIAL TG -- SIXTY YEARS AT SCRIPPS?!? Yep, you heard it right! Chuck
Colgan (25), Jill Ives (20), and Cindy Clark (15) invite you to their

Ship News
FLIP - The FAIRS experiment continues on schedule and without any major
difficulties. We continue to drift west and are now over 100 nautical
miles from Moss Landing, where the science crew change boat will leave
on
Sunday. All participants have deployed their equipment in good working
order. We have had low wind and swell conditions since arriving and are
now hopeful that we will get some rougher weather. The scientists from
NRL
and APL working on the microwave emissivity of foam have taken advantage
of
the mild conditions to deploy a unique device for controlled generation
of
sea foam. The "foam raft" is a 3 m x 7 m frame that floats on the surface
and supports an array of flexible porous tubing. Compressed air forced
through the tubing causes a large uniform patch of sea foam. The foam
patch is large enough to fill the field-of-view of the passive microwave
radiometers. This is the first time the emissivity of sea foam has been
measured in the open ocean. We have had a number of curious visitors to
FLIP in a wide range of size. A grey whale stopped by on the first day
and
we have had a couple of visits from dolphins. Lazy ocean sunfish hang
around almost every day along with couple of yellow fin tuna. Albatross
are a common sight and one day we had an Osprey sitting on the end of
the
port boom. (Andy Jessup, APL UW)
