chemist
and geochemist in SIO's Geosciences Research Division, was awarded the
2000
Leonard Medal at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society.
He
was presented the award by the Meteoritical Society "in recognition of
extensive and fundamental contributions to meteorite, lunar, and
terrestrial isotope geochemistry and the chronology of the solar system."
EXPEDITIONS REUNION PLANNED - The 50th reunion of Scripps's first
expeditions to the deep Pacific will take place on Saturday, September

day
will be comprised of an informal symposium, where key speakers will share
their experience and memories from these cruises, and discuss the
importance of the cruises in the history of SIO and the science of
oceanography. Deborah Day, SIO Archivist, would be very interested in
any
memorabilia that you may have and can bring. She can be reached at:
dday@ucsd.edu; (858) 534-5970; Mail Code 0219. There will be ship tours.

EARLY HISTORY OF SIO ON WEB - An early history of SIO (dating from 1912
and
written by SIO's founding director William E. Ritter) was scanned for
the
SIO Archives website. It is linked from SIO Archives' HISTORIES page as
well as from the SIO Archives' Bibliography of the History of SIO. Direct
url is: http://scilib.ucsd.edu/sio/archives/texts/ritter-1912/. The
citation is: Ritter, William E. The Marine Biological Station of San Diego,
its History, Present Conditions, Achievements, and Aims. University of
California Publications in Zoology, v.9, No. 4, 1912. pp.137-248, pls.
18-24, and 2 maps. Deborah Day, the SIO Archivist, wrote an annotation
for
this work as follows: "...the most comprehensive early history of the
Scripps Institution written by its founder and first director. This
history includes staff lists, a historical sketch, a description of Scripps
facilities including its campus and research vessel ALEXANDER AGASSIZ,
its
scientific results, its program for the future, a bibliography of staff
publications, and appendices including its original articles of
incorporation, by laws, a floor plan of the George H. Scripps Building,
and
photographs...." (Peter Brueggeman, x41230)
SIXTY YEARS AT SCRIPPS?!? Yep, you heard it right! Chuck Colgan (25),
Jill Ives (20), and Cindy Clark (15) invite you to their Survival
Celebration TG, at Surfside, Friday, October 6.........sixty down, sixty

Ship News
R/V Revelle - Weekly Scientific Report - 09/07/00 - The first leg of
the
Hawaii Ocean Mixing Experiment (HOME) survey sailed from Honolulu on August
29. The goal of the HOME survey is to find evidence of enhanced mixing
along the Hawaiian Ridge. The first week of the cruise has been devoted
to
ship surveys using SeaSoar and Revelle's new Doppler sonar. All equipment
has been working wonderfully as we have surveyed along the ridge from
Oahu
to French Frigate Shoals (FFS). Several days were spent examining the
region around FFS, with the finding of regions of large overturns and
strong shear over the ridge crest. Isopycnal displacements on the order
of
50-100 m are common near the ridge. Shears in excess of open ocean values
have been found at some distance from the ridge. Soon we plan to deploy
five profiling microstructure floats at locations along the ridge. The
floats will profile for two weeks, and will be recovered the last week
of
the cruise. (Daniel Rudnick/UCSD/SIO)
