Friday, September 7 DOCTORAL DISSERTATION DEFENSE - Monica Puyana will defend her doctoral dissertation entitled "Chemical Ecology of Caribbean Sponges of the Genus Aplysina" in 4500 Hubbs Hall at 10 a.m. The public is invited. (Tim Ryan, tjryan@ucsd.edu) Notices GIS ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE - The Electronic Information Center (EIC)/Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) lab in the UCSD Libraries' Social Science &
Humanities Library (SSHL) will be open this fall. Dan Henderson is the
new GIS Coordinator, available to advise UCSD faculty, staff, and students
on projects that utilize GIS to solve spatial problems and to map out
project areas. Dan comes to UCSD from the County of San Diego Department
of Planning and Land Use, MSCP Division, where he was a GIS Analyst for
2.5 years. He worked for Ogden Environmental previous to the County as
a GIS Technician. Ship News FLIP - On 23 August, FLIP was towed from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by theNavy salvage ship USS Salvor ARS 52 and on Friday, 25 August was moored in 2000 feet of water east of Oahu at 21-41N, 157-50W. The support from Salvor was great. FLIP has commenced support of the ONR sponsored research project Rough Evaporation Duct (RED) being conducted by SPAWAR San Diego headed by Kenn Anderson. Eric Terrell of Scripps is also embarked. FLIP is scheduled to return to Pearl Harbor about 19 September. (Bill Gaines). R/V Revelle - Aug. 29, 2001 - Weekly Science Report DRIFT Leg 4-
R/V Revelle left Puntarenas, Costa Rica at ~1200L on Aug. 24th having
loaded all science equipment and most personnel, and proceeded directly
for Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos, arriving there just after
lunch on Aug. 26th. We collected multibeam data after passing out of the
Costa Rican EEZ. Prior to arriving in the Galapagos we carried out a successful
compass calibration survey and flat-bottom survey for the MR1 sonar system.
This also confirmed proper functionality of the hardware that triggers
the MR1 sonar from the Simrad multibeam system. On Aug. 27th at 1600L,
after taking on additional science personnel and two Ecuadorian observers,
we departed Puerto Ayora for our survey area along the southwestern margin
of the Galapagos Platform. MR1 was deployed at ~2000hrs on Aug27th and
has been operational up to the present, collecting excellent data along
suvey lines at ~8kts. So far we have completed nearly 3 lines in the survey
area south of Isabela and west of Floreana Islands, covering 2090 square
nautical miles (~7168 square km) with side-scan imagery and slightly less
with bathymetric coverage. Debris flows, volcanic cones and constructional
terraces are well displayed on the imagery and will provide the data needed
to select dredge targets and areas where the WHOI camera system will be
towed. We expect to finish the first phase of sonar surveying in 2-3 CRUISE MAP INDEX/AREA/ CH SCI/INSTITUTION/ PORTS DAYS/AGENCY/ R/V Melville R/V New Horizon R/V Robert Gordon Sproul David Starr Jordan
