August
25 - September 1, 2000 vol. 37 no. 34
Calendar
Monday, August 28
DOCTORAL DISSERTATION DEFENSE - Keith Richards-Dinger will defend his
doctoral dissertation entitled "Crustal Thickness, Seismicity, and
P-wave Velocity Structure in Southern California from Data Recorded by
the
Southern California Seismic Network" in IGPP Munk Lab Conference Room
at
10 a.m. The public is invited. (Tanya Levi, tlevi@ucsd.edu)
Tuesday, August 29
ENDNOTE "HANDS-ON" CLASS IN THE GEISEL LIBRARY - 10 a.m. -12 noon in
the
Geisel Library Electronic Classroom. (This class is tailored for UCSD
Academics.) The UCSD Libraries and ISI ResearchSoft invite you to a
"hands-on" EndNote workshop. EndNote is a flexible tool for organizing
bibliographic references which allows you to insert citations and format
bibliographies from within your word processor. It includes the citation
styles from many scholarly journals simplifying your article submissions.
Class size is limited to 24. UCSD Academics only; please RSVP to Maggie
Houlihan at mhoulihan@ucsd.edu or call 534-7573 to ensure your spot.
Friday, September 1
DOCTORAL DISSERTATION DEFENSE - Andrew C. Manning will defend his doctoral
dissertation entitled "Temporal Variability of Atmospheric Oxygen from
Both
Continuous Measurements and a Flask Sampling Network: Tools for Studying
the Global Carbon Cycle" in IGPP Revelle Lab Conference Room at 2 p.m.
The
public is invited. (Tanya Levi, tlevi@ucsd.edu)

FUN (& SUN) HAD BY ALL - What a blast!! The 31st SIO Beach Party had
471
happy party-goers in attendance! The ocean was diamond-sparkly blue and
the entire day was just great! Thanks to Greg Szulgit for coming to the
rescue and bringing Syndey to La Jolla by coordinating the SIO Beach
Olympics........Here are the winners:
**Pier Swim - Catherine DeGroot-Hedlin, Katie Sandwell (14 yrs old!),
Dennis Roth,
Andy Tincu
**Beach Run - Dennis Roth, Rikki Rivera
**Kids Beach Run - Nicholas Roth & Jacqlyn Beupre
And, a HUGE and sandy thanks to the hardworking and dedicated
"It's-Always-The-Same-People" Volunteer Committee without whom there would
NOT be a Beach Picnic! (Jill Ives, x43948)
BILL SCHMIDT WINS MTS AWARD -- Bill Schmidt, a Scripps graduate student
in
applied oceans sciences, has been awarded the Marine Technology Society
Scholarship Award for 2000. He will receive a $1,000 cash prize at a
special awards ceremony in San Diego. Bill has been selected as the 2000
recipient of this award based on his "outstanding individual
accomplishments in academics and participation in extracurricular
activities." According to his MTS award citation, Bill has "demonstrated
a
commitment to the profession, academic achievement, motivation, and strong
goals." Congratulations, Bill! (SIO Communications, x43624)
SURF'S UP! One thing that makes the aquarium great is its close connection
to SIO. Our goal is to bring the institution's work to you in ways that
are informative and fun! In a partnership with Scripps's Center for Coastal
Studies and Sun Microsystems, aquarium visitors can now access
up-to-the-minute coastal data, including wave height and swell forecasts
for Southern California beaches. If you're a surfer, or just love waves,
this new computer interactive exhibit is for you! (David Krimmel, x47088)
CONGRATS! Congratulations to first-year marine biology student Christine
Anderson, recipient of the inaugural Claude E. ZoBell Fellowship for
2000-01. Besides being an excellent student (from the University of North
Carolina-Chapel Hill), her breadth of interests and community spirit is
shown by her involvement in the Big Buddy program. Her research goals
are
to study bacterial symbionts of marine invertebrates and their role in
chemical defense. She will be working in the lab of Margo Haygood.
SHIP TIME AVAILABLE FOR R/V R.G. SPROUL - For a variety of reasons,
the
currently scheduled use of R/V Robert G. Sproul is rather light in the
remainder of 2000 and in 2001. PIs with funded programs that require use
of the ship are encouraged to contact the Ship Scheduling Office (x2840;
shipsked@ucsd.edu). Existing schedules may be viewed on the web. Also,
it
is possible to apply for UC Ship Funds to obtain time on Sproul (and other
SIO ships) under priorities posted at:
http://www.sio.ucsd.edu/shipsked/News/Shipfunds/UCfunds.policy.html
Note that these priorities favor educational uses, student research and
support of young investigators and startup projects.
Ship News
R/V Revelle, Weekly Scientific Report, 8/23/0 - This transit leg has
provided a good test of our new surface towed vector magnetometer (a
motion reference unit from Seatex). After ironing out some telemetry
problems in port (thanks to Patrick, Mike, Jacques), we were able to
deploy the magnetometer shortly out of Astoria. Although we had initially
planned to use a weighted keel to stabilize the magnetometer orientation,
test deployments on the first day revealed that it towed in a remarkably
stable orientation without a keel at speeds up to 11 knots. The instrument
is apparently performing just as advertised, with orientation data precise
enough to yield high quality vector magnetic components. For example,
vector magnetic data from anomalies 23 to 26 north of the Murray fracture
zone compare very favorably with a previous vector aeromagnetic survey
in
this area. Three component magnetic data should improve identification
of
seafloor spreading anomalies at low magnetic latitudes and will also allow
an estimate of the two dimensionality of the source. Good weather, good
food and a helpful crew have made this a very enjoyable trip. Thanks also
to Tammy and Ron for their help in making this test trip a success.
