SPECIAL SEMINAR - Mathias Fink, Laboratoire Ondes et Acoustique
ESPCI, University of Paris, will present "Time-reversed Acoustics" in the IGPP Revelle Lab Conference Room at 2 p.m. Dr. Fink is a physics professor at the University of Paris. Some of the material in this seminar has been discussed in his November 1999 Scientific American article, "Time reversed Acoustics."

Saturday, August 19

SIO BEACH PICNIC - Cowabunga! Yo, Surf Dudes & Dudettes! It's the 31st SIO Beach Picnic, 12 noon - 6 p.m, on the beach north of the SIO Pier. Bring your Surf Kiddos and have some fun in the sun! You will groove to the cool live music played by "Steel Wave" while you munch on hot dogs,
snow cones, nachos, and the famous salmon chowder! Get your face painted or wear a neat balloon hat! Totally awesome new SIO water bottles FREE to all. Notices

CONGRATS, JOHN! IGPP Director John Orcutt has been selected to serve on the President's Ocean Exploration Panel. On June 12, 2000, President
Clinton directed the Secretary of Commerce to convene a panel of leading
ocean explorers, educators, and scientists and to report back to him within
120 days with recommendations for a national oceans exploration strategy.
Responsibility for implementing the Executive Order was delegated to Dave
Evans, NOAA's Assistant Administrator for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), who asked the NOAA Science Advisory Board to establish the panel and oversee its work. Two meetings of the Ocean Exploration Panel are planned in the Washington, DC area. The first meeting will be held August 22-23 and will feature briefings from various federal agencies on federal
activities and plans related to ocean exploration. A report to the President is due by October 10, 2000. SIO is extremely proud to have John Orcutt represent us on this distinguished panel.

POGO DIRECTOR ON BOARD - Dr. Kennel is delighted to announce that Dr. Shubha Sathyendranath has been selected as the first Executive Director of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO). She will be based at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For more information you can access the website at:

Ship News

Northeast Circle Expedition, leg 1, Juan de Fuca Geodesy, Progress Report Nearing the end of the trip - Now gathering high quality, triple-antenna GPS data, precision acoustic ranges and continuous CTD's at our site off the Southern Cascadia Subduction Zone following a good session at the Cleft segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. During our transit between sites, weather balloons were launched every 3 hours and GPS data recorded to determine GPS capability for measuring atmospheric water content from a dynamic/moving platform. Revelle in dynamic positioning is a very effective platform for GPS/Acoustic work - quiet and stable even in 25 knot winds. Will be offloading in Astoria Friday. We owe a great deal for the success and livability of this leg to the ship's force from the engine room to the galley to the bridge, including the relief personnel - particularly Captain Morgan Turrell, Chief Engineer Paul Mauricio, Chief Mate Pat Pasanen and Senior Cook Bob Seeley. We look forward to further Revelle operations in November and beyond. (F. N. Spiess, J. A. Hildebrand, C. D. Chadwell)

R/V Revelle, NorthEast Circle Expedition leg #1 - Juan de Fuca PlateGeodesy Project (August 1). At both new sites: East Flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge and South Cascadia, we have used our new optical survey package to make accurate depth measurements of all seafloor transponders. This represents a promising first step towards the capability to collocate nearby seafloor objects at the centimeter level. We completed underwater vehicle operations and transferred scientific personnel off shore Newport on July 28. We are now reconfigured for dedicated GPS and acoustic range data collection at each of our seafloor transponder networks. After personnel transfer we steamed to our North Cascadia site and found the array still active, but in need of additional transponder installations to remain viable. We have returned to the south to observe the positions of the Pacific-plate site established at Cleft in 1994, the new east flank and South Cascadia sites. The recently installed shipboard towers for the GPS antennas are performing admirably at the centimeter-level, along with the instrument-well transducer assembly. While on station, continuous
cycling of the CTD from surface to seafloor helps characterize underwater sound speed changes affecting our acoustic range measurements. Also underway is a data collection effort to evaluate the capability of GPS signals recorded at the ship to image atmospheric water-vapor independently measured by radiosonde balloons launched from the Revelle.
