WALTER MUNK HONORED -- In cooperation with the International
Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO), Prince
Rainier of Monaco has created the Prince Albert I Medal in the
physical sciences of the oceans. A special committee appointed by
IAPSO President, MIT Prof. Paola Malanotte-Rizzoli has selected
Scripps's Prof. Walter Munk as the first winner of the Prince Albert
I Medal. The medal will be presented for the first time at the
IAPSO/IABO Joint Assembly in Mar del Plata, Argentina, at the
ceremony dinner on Oct. 24, 2001. The medal is named in honor of the
late Prince Albert I of Monaco who, in 1919, organized the
Oceanography Section of the International Union of Geodesy &
Geophysics (IUGG). The medal will be awarded biannually by IAPSO.

R/P FLIP - On 02 August, 2001, R/P FLIP departed for a four month
deployment to Hawaii, towed by the Navy tug USNS Sioux. FLIP will
arrive in Pearl Harbor on 14 August and on 20 August proceed to the
northeast of Oahu where it will be moored for 30 days supporting the
ONR/SPAWAR Rough Evaporation Duct (RED) Experiment, returning to
Pearl Harbor on 19 September. Following a brief inport period in
Pearl Harbor, FLIP will sail south of Oahu to support the ONR/NSF
HOME project. Officer in Charge of FLIP is Tom Golfinos. (Bill
Gaines, MPL).

DRIFT Leg 3 Report, 8 August 2001- Keir Becker, ch. sci., U. of Miami
Primary objectives of DRIFT Leg 3 are to emplace multi-year
subseafloor hydrogeological experiments in two holes drilled by DSDP
and ODP on the southern flank of the Costa Rica Rift. These are
similar in concept to "CORK" observatories deployed since 1991 by
ODP, but are deployed by the MPL Control Vehicle and hence are
sometimes termed "wireline CORKs". The CORK team from University of
Miami - RSMAS and Geological Survey of Canada are collaborating with
an MPL team led by Fred Spiess. The two holes selected for these
initial wireline CORK installations are located in an area of active
off-axis hydrothermal circulation in young oceanic crust beneath a
relatively thick and impermeable sediment cover. Since arriving on
location about a week ago, a wireline reentry temperature log of one
of the holes - Hole 896A located on a buried basement high - confirms
predictions of vigorous upflow of 60-70 =B0C formation fluids and
indicates that these fluids are produced from at least two distinct
zones within basement. In the past three days, this hole has been
instrumented with pressure gauges and downhole temperature sensors,
but the attempt to isolate the producing formations with two packers
has not met with success. In the next week, we plan on installing a
similar observatory in a reference site about 1 km away, Hole 504B,
and then measuring detailed profiles of surface heat flow in the area.
