4-August 11, 2000 vol. 37 no. 31
Calendar
Tuesday, August 8
MOC Meeting - The Marine Operations Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m.
in 114
Scripps Building. (sylvia@sio.ucsd.edu)
Wednesday, August 9
PORD Seminar - Paolo Cipollini, Southampton Oceanography Centre, will
present "Oceanic Rossby waves in satellite data: techniques and multisensor
observations at the Southampton Oceanography Centre," at 3:30 p.m. in
101 Nierenberg Hall. Refreshments will be served at 3:15 p.m. (Arne Biastoch,
abiastoch@ucsd.edu)

Shark Discovery Days - The Birch Aquarium at Scripps will team with the
Discovery Channel, Daniels CableVision, and Time Warner Cable to present
the 7th annual Shark Discovery Days kick-off weekend, Saturday and Sunday,
Aug. 12 and 13. Shark Discovery Days will continue at the aquarium on
weekends through Labor Day. Special displays and educational activities
will uncover the truth about sharks and dispel many of the myths about
their behavior and natural history.
Large Pelagic Shark Dissection with Dr. Jeff Graham - Don't miss this
opportunity to observe Scripps shark researcher Dr. Jeffrey Graham as
he
dissects a mako shark, blue shark, thresher shark, and salmon shark. Dr.
Graham will narrate while examining the internal organs, including the
stomach, whose contents will provide evidence of the predator's last meal.
The evening will conclude with light refreshments and a guided tour through
the aquarium. Dr. Graham's shark dissection will complete a two-part
program that begins with a hands-on dissection of a small shark with the
guidance of a researcher. For more information, please call the aquarium
at 534-7336.
Shark Dissection Live On line - For those unable to attend the
dissection--watch it live on the Birch Aquarium Web site at
aquarium.ucsd.edu. Log on at 6:30 p.m. on August 19 to see an exciting
hour of the dissection program and to learn more about the mysteries of
sharks. (SIO Communications, x43624)
Coastwalk - Again! Another group of "Coastwalkers" will be camping on
the
lawn south of the SIO Director's Office on Wednesday and Thursday evenings,
Aug. 9 and 10. This group of families, including about a dozen children
ages 5-16, will start walking Aug. 6 at the Tijuana Estuary. They'll camp
on the Bay Side of Silver Strand, sleep on the "Star of India," spend
a day
in Balboa Park, and pitch their tents near a dorm at Pt. Loma Nazarene
College. Their trek will end Friday with an SIO pier tour and visit and
lunch at the Birch Aquarium. For more details about Coastwalk, please
see:

Ship News
R/V New Horizon, Weekly Scientific Report, 31 July 2000:
We arrived off Crescent City at 11:00 p.m. 28 July 2000 and began to
sample
along the Crescent City (CR) transect line (41 54'N) with CDT's (+nutrients
and chlorophylls) and vertical plankton net tows (1/2 m diameter net,
202
um mesh). The newly-trained B-Team rose to the occasion and promptly
completed their one station in 45 minutes a little slow but no too shabby.
Since the A-Team came on watch at midnight, the B-Team went promptly to
bed
with visions of a perfect cruise dancing through their heads. The A-Team
did not disappoint --they knocked off their stations in record time,
finishing up their work at seven stations just as their watch ended at
noon
on the 29th. We then did a 180 turn and steamed back to CR-1 doing bird
and mammal observations along the way. We arrived at the CR-1 by 7:30
p.m., did another 180 and began MOCNESS tows at CR-2. We did four MOCNESS
tows along CR line, at CR-2 (72 m depth), CR-3 (137 m depth), CR-4 (508
m
depth) and CR-5 (654 m), finishing up at approximately 7:30 a.m. on the
30th.
The New Horizon then steamed to the outside end of the Rogue River (RR)
Line and sampled stations RR 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 with CTD and vertical
plankton nets beginning at noon on the 30th. We sampled inbound at
stations 7, 6, 5, then broke off to complete the transect before dark
so
that bird and mammal people could have a complete transect with daylight.
At 7 p.m. we resumed the CTD and plankton work at RR 1, 2, and 3 with
MOCNESS as RR 3. Miscommunications at the changing of the watch at
midnight resulted in NOT sampling RR4 with CTD or vertical tow. Que
lastima! Oh well, c'est la vie. We did get a great MOCNESS series with
night tows at RR 3
and 4 followed by day tows RR 2, 3, 4, and 6. The Wecoma passed by just
as
we were sampling RR3 with the MOCNESS, and called to report excitedly
that
the acoustic was seeing lots of "euphausiids" between 100 and 150 m we
sampled that layer and found large numbers of pteropods, but no
euphausiids, demonstrating the value of using the MOCNESS for acoustic
target verification!
Well, we wrapped up the Rogue River line by 1:45 p.m. and are now headed
north for the Coos Bay transect line. We will first pass over Coquille
Bank and if it is a hotspot for bird or mammals, we'll stop and do two
or
three CTD and vertical plankton net stations.
To this point, our total casts and tows include:
CTD 17
Vertical Plankton Nets 16
MOCNESS 10
Live Net tows 6
Signing off at 1630h.
