CRD SEMINAR -
Patrick Marchesiello, Department of Atmospheric Sciences,
University of California, Los Angeles, will present, "Modeling the
California Current System: Strategy and Results", in 101 Nierenberg Hall
Conference Room at 3:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served at 3:20 p.m.
The
seminar is sponsored by the Climate Research Division. (Carolyn Baxter,

DOCTORAL DISSERTATION DEFENSE -
Fabrice Veron will defend his doctoral
dissertation entitled, "Turbulent Mixing at the Surface of Natural Water
Bodies: Breaking Waves and Langmuir Circulations in IGPP Munk Lab
Conference Room at 3 p.m. The public is invited. (Melanie Al-Rawi,
malrawi@sio.ucsd.edu)
Friday, August 4
SPECIAL PORD SEMINAR - Dr. Youyu Lu, Dalhousie University, Halifax, will
present "Relaxing the Boussinesq approximation in ocean circulation models"
at 11:00 a.m. in Nierenberg Hall 101. (Arne Biastoch, abiastoch@ucsd.edu)

Shark Discovery Days -
The Birch Aquarium at Scripps will team with the
Discovery Channel, Daniels CableVision, and Time Warner Cable to present
the 7th annual Shark Discovery Days kick-off weekend, Saturday and Sunday,
Aug. 12 and 13. Shark Discovery Days will continue at the aquarium on
weekends through Labor Day. Special displays and educational activities
will uncover the truth about sharks and dispel many of the myths about
their behavior and natural history. During the Shark Discovery Days
kick-off weekend, aquarium visitors are invited to explore different shark
species and their relatives through aquarium activities, exhibits, and
hands-on displays. San Diego mayor Susan Golding has proclaimed Aug. 12
and 13 Shark Discovery Weekend, so come to the aquarium to "discover"
the
fun and fascinating world of sharks.
Join Scripps shark researcher Dr. Jeffrey Graham for a two-part
shark dissection at the Birch Aquarium as part of Shark Days. Part one
of
the program is a hands-on exploration of shark biology and a rare
opportunity for participants to dissect a small shark specimen with the
guidance of a researcher. In part two, participants will observe Dr.
Graham's dissection of a large shark. He will narrate while examining
the
internal organs, including the stomach, the contents of which will provide
evidence of the predator's last meal. Both parts of this program are
offered in Spanish/English bilingual sessions.
During the Shark Summer Nights Lecture Series, local shark experts
will present special lectures on sharks and their relatives that will
allow
the public to explore the mysterious and exciting world of these
magnificent marine animals. Three lectures in August will each highlight
different shark-related topics. For more information on Shark Discovery
Days call the aquarium at X47336.
Great News! -- One of our own, Scripps grad student, Megan McArthur,
has
been selected as a NASA astronaut candidate, a life-long dream of hers.
Megan is affiliated with the Marine Physical Laboratory. According to
NASA:
"Seventeen men and women have been selected for the astronaut candidate
class of 2000. The astronaut candidates were selected through a highly
competitive process that evaluated their education, training, experience,
and unique qualifications. Following the initial period of training and
evaluation, the astronaut candidates will receive technical assignments
and
continue training in preparation for space flight assignment."
Congratulations, Megan. You make Scripps proud! (SIO Communications,

R/V Revelle, NorthEast Circle Expedition leg #2 - Juan de Fuca Plate
Geodesy Project. Goal of the Juan de Fuca Plate Geodesy Project is to
measure motion of sea floor points on the plate with centimeter accuracy
relative to North America to document convergence across the Cascadia
Subduction Zone and to study the behavior of young crust as it moves away
from the Cleft Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. This expedition leg
will
continue GPS/Acoustic observations at our North Cascadia site and establish
new stations at South Cascadia and Cleft Flank. At this time we have
surveyed the sea floor at the South Cascadia site and successfully deployed
an array of four precision transponders. Calibration of array geometry
will
follow before moving to install four more transponders at Cleft Flank.
We
appreciate the support of Capt. Turrell, Chief Engr. Mauricio and others
of
the ship's force.
Have deployed our second array of precision transponders, this one on
the
east flank of the Cleft Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. All units are
yielding high quality data - Revelle is a good quiet platform, and dynamic
positioning allows us to hold within a few meters of the optimum location
for data collection. We are experimenting successfully with a promising
adjunct to our Control Vehicle to measure the relative depths of our
transponders at the centimeter level. Currently making near bottom
calibration of the Cleft Flank array and plan to return to our South
Cascadia site before making a personnel transfer off Newport Friday
evening. Marking a fifty-eighth wedding anniversary on July 25 for Sally
(ashore) and F. N. (at sea). F. N. Spiess, J. A. Hildebrand, C. D.
Chadwell.
