In Memoriam

It is with profound grief that I must tell you that Dr. Mia Tegner, research marine biologist in the MLRG, died January 7 in a scuba diving accident off Mission Beach. Needless to say, words cannot express how shocked and saddened we are by this terrible tragedy. In the short span of three weeks, we have lost another of our fine biologists, creating a great void in the fabric of SIO. Not only was Mia among our best and brightest scientists, she was also a dedicated and tireless public advocate for marine ecology and conservation issues. Our hearts and prayers go out to Mia's family, her colleagues, and her many friends. In lieu of flowers, people who wish to honor Mia can make gifts to Scripps Institution of Oceanography to support kelp forest research.

WELCOME! Please welcome Stephen Miller back to SIO as the new Head of the Geological Data Center. Stephen holds a UCSD BA in physics and a MIT MS in geophysics. He has held academic positions in various fields of marine geophysics at IGPP, WHOI, MPL, and UCSB. Since 1993, Stephen has worked with commercial technology-sector firms engaged in marine geophysical mapping, multibeam sonar systems, and international submarine cable networks, to name a few areas. He looks forward to alliances with Scripps PIs to develop proposals and build up GDC capability in the user-friendly provision of datasets and data analysis systems that enable future research and education. Interested PIs are encouraged to give him a call (x41898) and explore such alliances.

NSF DECADAL PLANNING REPORT - The NSF Committee on Ocean Sciences at the New Millenium has posted a draft version of its report to NSF at http://www.joss.ucar.edu/joss_psg/publications/decadal/ (readers using Microsoft Explorer may wish to use http://www.geo-prose.com/decadal). Pre-publication comments on the report are encouraged. Note that at this stage comments cannot be general, e.g. whether a favored topic is highlighted or omitted, but should specifically address whether the committee has met its charge and whether the conclusions are substantiated by the information in the body of the report. -Russ Davis and Mark Ohman
