Calendar

Friday, July 13

SPECIAL SEMINAR - Peter Brueggeman, SIO Library, will present "Images of the Tonnara" in 4500 Hubbs Hall at 12 noon. You may not know that beneath the persona of Peter Brueggeman, mild mannered librarian, lies an adventurer, diver and photographer. Peter has recently had the opportunity to go to Sardinia to observe and photograph the Tonnara, the centuries old method of harvesting bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean, whereby migrating tuna are led into a series of chambers, culminating in the "chamber of death" where they are concentrated and removed. (Richard Rosenblatt, x42199)

LET'S HELP THE SNACK BAR - Friends, if you are having a group of visitors to SIO and know that they will be using the Snack Bar, PLEASE contact either Bruce Deck (bdeck@ucsd.edu), Jill Ives (jives@ucsd.edu) so we can let the Snack Bar folks know to be ready for an influx of customers. Thanks!

DURIP - The Department of Defense (DOD) has announced the Fiscal Year (FY) 2002 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP), a part of the University Research Initiative (URI). This program will be administered through the Army Research Office (ARO), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), and the office of the chief scientist of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO). DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment. Proposals must be delivered by 4:00 Eastern Daylight Time, August 23, 2001. Please note that proposals delivered by commercial carriers are considered "hand carried" and that no exceptions can be made to allow such proposals to be considered if, for any reason, they are received after the deadline. Offerors are advised that some proposals responding to past announcements that
were sent via commercial carriers were delayed during shipment and arrived after the deadlines, typically by one or two days. To decrease the probability that proposals delivered by commercial carriers will arrive after the deadline and thus be ineligible to compete, offerors are encouraged to schedule delivery to occur before the deadline date. Proposal guidelines can be found at www.onr.navy.mil/sci_tech/special/onrpgafm.htm. (Nancy Wilson, x44571)

DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL JULY 17 - If you wish to be listed in the 2001 Research Activities book please return your information by this date. All academics who have not yet responded will receive reminder information this week. E-mail questions to ncriqui@ucsd.edu. If you do not respond, we will use the information currently on the Web site. To take a look at the Research Activities Web site go to http://www.sioadm.ucsd.edu/rab/.

R/V REVELLE - . Expedition NECC - (A joint project between Nova SE University Oceanographic Center and Scripps Insitution of Oceanography - Hello from the Revelle! We are currently surveying a4000 square mile area of the NECC near 6N,95W using several acoustic transducers and the towed hydrographic package (seasoar). To date we have deployed more than 50 mixed layer drifting buoys and completed 10 velocity sections and 4 hydrographic sections across the eastward current. The current speeds at the surface have often been as large as 2 knots, and there are many interesting features which develop with depth. A few days ago we had our first substantial sunshine, but now the clouds, winds, and rain are back. This is of course to be expected since we are surveying the counter current which generally lies directly beneath the ITCZ - the tropical heat engine of the atmosphere. Everyone is healthy, working hard, and continuing to enjoy the relative comfort and seaworthiness of the Revelle.
