Notices CONGRATULATIONS BONNIE AND JOEL! Two Scripps graduate students in the
Biological Oceanography curricular group have been selected to receive
environmental research awards. Bonnie Becker, a third-year student working
with Paul Dayton and Lisa Levin in MLRG, was selected for a Switzer Environmental
Fellowship by the Switzer Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation.
Chosen as one of 10 scholars each receiving a $13,000 award, Becker was
selected for her "strong academic record and demonstrated commitment to
environmental protection and restoration and leadership qualities." Becker
is interested in scientifically-informed coastal zone management and the
design of marine reserves. Becker also has been selected to receive the
2001 Bob Davey Memorial Scholarship from the Sierra Club's North County
chapter. The $1,000 award is given to graduate students conducting environmental
work in San Diego County. Joel Fodrie, a first-year student working with
Lisa Levin, has won a Coastal Environmental Quality Initiative Graduate
Research Award from the University of California Marine Council. Fodrie
will receive $10,000 to support his research evaluating the importance
of coastal habitat types as productive nursery grounds for the California
halibut. Congratulations! BOB LUM'S GOLF FIESTA - Four p.m. is the tee-off time for Bob Lum's retirement party, Friday, June 15. Don't get caught in a sand trap! Come to T-29 for excellent eats and say hasta la bye bye to one of SIO's most favorite friends..........(Caddie Senora Jill Ives, x43948) MARK YOUR CALENDARS - The Umpteenth SIO Beach Picnic will be held on Saturday, August 18, on the beach north of the SIO Pier. Bring the kids! Ship News Drift Expedition, leg 1, 2nd progress report - 27 May - A beautiful quiet sunny Sunday evening - wind and ship on nearly the same course and speed - steaming 12.5 knots toward Newport for tomorrow's personnel transfer. A cup of coffee, a ceremonial cigar and quiet conversation on the main deck aft mark the conclusion of a successful expedition. Many megabytes of high grade data are now stored on various disks, here and at the shore reference stations operated by supportive colleagues, awaiting processing at home to shed some light on the contradictions between seafloor motion known to be intermittent at the Juan de Fuca Ridge crest and continuous far from the ridge. We are looking ahead with much interest toward generating the results from 3 days of GPS, precision acoustic transponder and CTD data collection at our Cleft Flank station about 20 km from the plate edge, where motion, possibly different from the steady plate velocity, will give us new clues about the properties of this young crust and rifting processes at the crest. After Newport, we will be gathering topographic and gravity data on the three day trip south to San Diego. As we go, the Captain, Chief Engineer and embarked technical folk have agreed to hold seminars on SIO ship and technical support activities for the benefit of our volunteers, particularly the four Aquarium Docents in the group. We have been fortunate with the weather, and are appreciative of the friendly, capable support of the technical staff and the ship's force - good food from the galley and professional performances on the part of all.
