E.O. WILSON PUBLIC LECTURE AT BIRCH AQUARIUM - Renowned biologist E.O. Wilson will receive the inaugural Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest during a special awards ceremony on at 4:30 p.m. in the tent in front of the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. The event will include a free public lecture by Wilson, the Harvard professor recognized as one of the world's leading environmental scientists. Wilson's lecture, "The Future of Life," will cover the present and likely future status of biodiversity and current activities and prospects of the global conservation movement. The Nierenberg Prize has been established to honor the memory of William A. Nierenberg, who led UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography as director for more than two decades and died last Sept. He was a renowned and acknowledged national science leader and served Scripps Institution as director from 1965 to 1986. The public is welcome to attend this free lecture, but Birch Aquarium admission is not included. (Cindy Clark, x41294)

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM LECTURE - Hartmut Walter will present "Hope for Socorro: Restoring and Protecting Mexico's Little Galapagos" at the Natural History Museum at 7 p.m. The four volcanic islands of the Revillagigedo Archipelago lie only a few hundred miles south of Cabo San Lucas. Relatively unknown, these tropical islands have retained much of their original nature and beauty. Although declared a Biosphere Reserve by the Mexican government, little has been done to reverse habitat degradation and other extinction threats in recent years. A joint U.S.-Mexican conservation project (including San Diego scientists) is trying to safeguard the unique biodiversity of the entire archipelago and return the almost extinct Socorro Dove to its ancestral island. This lecture discusses the practical problems and challenges of island conservation as well as the importance of Socorro for a better understanding of island biogeography. Call (619) 232-03821 for reservations or visit www.sdnhm.org.

Friday, May 25

MARINE BIOLOGY SEMINAR - Stephen Schroeder will present a title to be announced in 4500 Hubbs Hall at 12 noon. CONGRATS TO YOU ALL! Antarctica Service Medals have been been awarded by the NSF to LeRoy Dorman, Allan Sauter, Sharon Escher, and Nancy Kanjorski for work during the 1999-2000 field season. These awards are not rare for Scripps since SIO scientists have worked in Antarctica for many years, but this particular occasion is unusual because the recipients are not biologists and one is a senior citizen. Congratulations!

JIMMY HONORED ONCE AGAIN - Jim Stewart, Scripps diving officer emeritus, will be honored with the 2001 Roger Revelle Trophy of the San Diego Oceans Foundation for "significant contributions to the Oceans Foundation's mission of advancement of stewardship of the oceans" (or is that "Stewart-ship" of the oceans?) The citation praises Jim: "Your accomplishments in the field of safe scientific diving over many years have contributed not only to the advancement of underwater science, but also to the safety of all who dive in San Diego waters." Jim will receive his trophy at the Oceans Benefit Dinner on June 9. Congratulations, Jim! (SIO Communications, x43624)

HIP HIP HOORAY! In early January, the 2000-2001 Exemplary Staff Employee of the Year Award Program was announced. Many nominations were received. Two people from SIO won Commendable Service Awards: Frank M. Biegler, Marine Mechanician, Marine Physical Laboratory; and HJ. Walker, Jr., Senior Museum Scientist, SIO Director's Office/Fish Collection. WAY TO GO, GUYS!!

JPL OPEN HOUSE THIS WEEKEND -- If your calendar is open this weekend, head up to Pasadena for the free, annual open house at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Visitors will see exhibits, displays, demonstrations and presentations about new technologies, solar system exploration, spacecraft communication and much more. For more information, visit the following web site: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/openhouse/.

GET YOUR TWO CENTS IN!!!!!!! Do you like your job? What don't you like? Have suggestions? Chancellor Dynes has appointed a Staff Retention and Support Steering Committee (SRSSC) charged with reviewing UCSD processes and systems for supporting staff during this next decade of unprecedented growth. This committee hopes to provide staff with the tools, resources, processes, and work environment that will allow us to be successful in carrying our their duties. They need to hear from YOU! You can simply go online to respond to their questions at http://blink.ucsd.edu/go/survey. Or if you would rather participate in a forum setting, go to Sumner Auditorium, Tuesday, May 29, 2-4 p.m. The Chancellor has approved a two-hour leave with pay with supervisor approval. Also, hard copies of the questionnaire can be found in the Director's Office lobby next to the aquarium. Now's your chance.......take it. (Jill Ives, x43948)
