GREAT NEWS! Just in time to start the new year right, we received news that the G. Unger Vetlesen Foundation will continue its generous support for global change research with an award of $850,000! Now in its thirteenth consecutive year of providing funding for Scripps, Vetlesen supports numerous projects throughout the institution. In addition to funding new and continuing research projects, Vetlesen grants have frequently been used to provide necessary matches for support from federal sources. (Edwina Riblet, eriblet@ucsd.edu)

YOU'RE INVITED ON A VIRTUAL EXPEDITION! Join Scripps researchers on a scientific expedition to study the volcanoes of Costa Rica via the Internet beginning, January 4. The Scripps Web site, titled Volcano Expedition, will allow users to log on and follow a two-week-long field trip to six active volcanic areas in the highlands of Costa Rica in Central America. Headquartered in the Costa Rican capital city of San Jose, the expedition, led by Scripps geochemist Dr. David Hilton, will make daily forays into the tropical rain forests and higher elevations of the Costa Rican interior. Web users will be able to travel along with the team by logging on to receive daily scientific reports from the field. Users of all ages will be able to access a virtual encyclopedia of information about volcanoes and related geophysical phenomena, along with questions and answers and science classroom activities. The site will feature photographic documentation of the expedition, along with videos on the field research being conducted by a multinational team of earth scientists and graduate students. Please take a look at the NEW Scripps Volcano Expedition Web site: http://scripps.ucsd.edu/volcano.

LAST CALL FOR CELL PHONES - WOW! Thanks to you all, my couch has basically disappeared! Keep those broken or unused cell phones coming! I'll collect them to be refurbished and given to domestic violence victims until next Friday, January 12. Drop them off at 119 Scripps Building, or 0210. THANKS so-o-o MUCH! (Jill Ives, x43948)
