On four select Saturdays at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, trade in old light bulbs for new, energy-efficient models for free and get 2-for-1 same-day aquarium admission. ![]() Light bulb exchanges at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Participants must a bring a copy of their current San Diego Gas & Electric utility bill and/or a California ID to prove San Diego County residency. In addition, expired CFL bulbs will be accepted at the event for proper disposal. In California, CFLs cannot be disposed of in regular trash or recycling bins because of trace amounts of mercury contained in the bulbs. Once inside the gates, visitors can explore Birch Aquarium at Scripps' award-winning exhibit, Feeling the Heat: The Climate Challenge. Through hands on-activities, videos and visuals, guests can learn the scientific facts of climate change and discover tips for reducing carbon emissions. Birch Aquarium's light bulb exchanges are held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the aquarium entrance and are offered through a partnership with SDG&E and the City of San Diego.
