Celebrate World Oceans Day with Birch Aquarium at Scripps

Special events and activities throughout June will honor our oceans

It's time to celebrate our big blue ocean!

Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, will mark World Oceans Day with special activities on Friday, June 8 (World Oceans Day) and Saturday, June 9 to honor our connection to the ocean and raise awareness about the need to protect it.

Celebrate this year's "Oceans of Inspiration" theme featuring Dr. Seuss' classic One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish with special activities from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Explore the aquarium in Seussian style as you spot fish with zany names and odd shapes. Learn about fish diversity as you peer through microscopes, touch shark skin and observe swimming fish. Enjoy a fishy scavenger hunt and story times throughout the day.

All activities are included with paid aquarium admission.

What inspires your love of our oceans? In celebration of World Oceans Day, we're asking our Birch Aquarium Pinterest followers to help us create a collection of all things "Ocean Inspired" for a chance to win prizes. Beginning May 1 through June 8 (World Oceans Day), pin your favorite ocean inspiration, tag us (#birchaquarium) and we will add your pin to our Ocean Inspirations board. Pinned items could be a favorite ocean hobby, craft, photograph or animal - get creative! Winners will be randomly selected on June 8. Limit five pins per user. View complete contest rules online.

Still feel like celebrating? Honor the ocean all month long with a series of special activities and events at Birch Aquarium at Scripps designed to raise awareness of our ocean.

Grunion Runs are a one-of-a-kind Southern California experience.

Wednesday, June 6
Grunion Run
10:45 p.m.-12:45 a.m.

Observe hundreds of small silver fish called grunion ride the waves onto La Jolla beaches to spawn. Before hitting the beach, see grunion hatch before your eyes during a special presentation about this mysterious fish. Prepare for cool, wet conditions and bring a flashlight. Ages 6-13 must attend with a paid adult.

Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture

135 Years of Global Ocean Warming
Dean Roemmich, Scripps physical oceanographer


A new study comparing past and present ocean temperatures reveals the global ocean has been warming for more than a century. Join Dean Roemmich, Scripps physical oceanographer and study co-author, as he describes how warm our oceans are getting, where all that heat is going, and how this knowledge will help scientists better understand the earth's climate. Learn how scientists measured ocean temperature during the historic voyage of the HMS Challenger (1872-76) and how today's network of ocean-probing robots is changing the way scientists study the seas. SEA Days: Boundless Energy

11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Get charged up about the future of energy at Birch Aquarium at Scripps! Explore renewable energy sources and decide how you would choose to power the future. Meet our friends from the California Center for Sustainable Energy as they reveal easy energy solutions. Young adventurers can explore hands-on exhibits, make a craft and listen to story time. Included with admission.

Dads receive FREE admission to Birch Aquarium with a paying guest (either a child or adult) on June 17, 2012.

20th Anniversary Offer for San Diego Residents


Birch Aquarium at Scripps celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2012 with a special gift for San Diego County residents: Half-off admission on the 20th of every month through our anniversary month in September. Valid for residents living in zip codes 91901-92199. Visitors must show a valid ID with the zip code to receive the offer. Limit two children per valid adult. Cannot be combined with other offers.

Summer Learning Adventure Camps

Investigate ocean wonders during Summer Learning Adventure Camps.

Camps begin June 25

From the classroom to the seashore, our accredited camps merge scientific exploration with hands-on fun and learning. Campers ages 4-15 investigate marine habitats, create ocean art projects, learn about careers in oceanography, combine the science and sports of surfing and snorkeling and more, all while making new friends and memories. Camps run through August 24. View programs and register online.
