There are reasons to be hopeful when it comes to the future of the ocean, despite prevailing concerns of doom and gloom.

Knowlton's book, Citizens of the Sea, discusses the Census of Marine Life.

Join Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, and get inspired by special guest Nancy Knowlton, founding director of the Scripps Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation and current Sant Chair of Marine Science at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.

Knowlton is a winner of the Peter Benchley Award and the Heinz Award for her work in marine science and conservation. Her recent book, Citizens of the Sea, celebrates the Census of Marine Life, a decade-long effort to catalog and estimate the total diversity of life in the vast global ocean. More than 6,000 potentially new species were discovered in the recently completed census, which involved the work of more than 2,700 scientists from 80 nations.

A booksigning will follow the lecture. The book is currently on sale in the aquarium Gift Shop.
