New Café to Open at Scripps Seaside Forum

Caroline's Seaside Cafe by GIUSEPPE to provide gourmet food service at the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society and the Environment on the Scripps oceanfront campus

Scripps Institution of Oceanography / University of California, San Diego

Scripps Institution of Oceanography will open a new café at the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society and the Environment, known by the nickname Scripps Seaside Forum. The café will be operated by GCIUFFA, INC., which owns and operates Giuseppe Restaurants & Fine Catering of La Jolla.

The café will be named Caroline's Seaside Café by GIUSEPPE in honor of the long-time support and generosity of the family of William A. Nierenberg, who served as director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, for 21 years, from 1965 to 1986. Known for his boundless curiosity and energy, Nierenberg helped build Scripps into one of the world's leading environmental research institutions. The café will be named for Caroline, wife of Nierenberg's son, Nico. Although Nierenberg passed away in 2000, his family continues its connection and support of Scripps Oceanography.

UC San Diego's construction of the new café will be completed on July 15, and following additional outfitting by Giuseppe, the cafe will have a tentative opening the first week in August. Caroline's Seaside Café will be open to the public and will provide the primary food service for more than 2,200 faculty, staff, students and volunteers at Scripps Oceanography. The cafe will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, except during UCSD holidays and campus closures. The menu will include healthy and creative California-style cuisine with a focus on organic and sustainable sources, hormone-free meats and poultry, fresh produce that is locally grown and seafood selections meeting nationally recognized sustainability criteria. The café will feature breakfast and lunch daily with a main menu selection and daily specials. In addition, eco-friendly plates and take-out containers will be used, though china and flatware will be used for dining in.

Caroline's Seaside Café by GIUSEPPE will add ocean-view indoor and outdoor dining as the newest component of Scripps' extraordinary, oceanfront conference center facility, located in the heart of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus. The Scripps Seaside Forum was awarded LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in August 2009. The rating is based on site sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, indoor environmental quality and innovation and design process.

In addition to providing customized catering services, Giuseppe also operates the Café at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla and the European-style bistro Sculpture Court Café at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park.
