Monday, March 8 The Future Stewards of our Planet Please join us for a special Perspectives event as we learn about the challenging research work of the outstanding fellowship students at Scripps Oceanography. Learn about topics as diverse as climate science, coastal geology and deep-sea diversity as you browse student posters and speak with future scientists about their work. Three students will give brief presentations on their research discoveries and share their visions for the future of their disciplines. Monday, April 12 Solar Activity during the Last Millennium Devendra Lal, Scripps geochemist The sun dominates life on our planet, yet we know astonishingly little about long-term variation in solar activity and how it might have influenced Earth's climate. Join Scripps Oceanography geochemist Devendra Lal as he explains how chemical clues locked in Antarctic ice can reconstruct 1,000 years of solar activity and how this knowledge is critical to understanding Earth's climate history. Monday, May 10 First Annual Keeling Lecture  Steve Running, University of Montana Steve Running, director of the Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group, Department of Ecosystem Sciences, University of Montana Please join us for the inaugural Keeling Lecture. In memory of distinguished Scripps Oceanography professor Charles David Keeling's life and invaluable contributions to climate science and Scripps, Birch Aquarium at Scripps will be hosting the first in an annual series of talks related to our changing planet. Each year the series will bring a prominent member of the global change community to Scripps to speak on topics that reflect the legacy of Keeling's work. This year, Steve Running, a professor in the College of Forestry and Conservation at the University of Montana, will discuss the paradox of why forests in the West are growing faster while simultaneously suffering from higher die-off rates. Running is a member of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and was the lead author on a 2007 report analyzing North America's contribution to atmospheric carbon dioxide and its impacts on the global climate. ----- Perspectives lectures are intended for a lay audience.
