About Newsfeeds

What is an RSS newsfeed?

Newsfeeds allow you to see the latest in Scripps Oceanography News whenever we add a new press release without having to visit the Scripps Oceanography News website. The "feed" is just that , a feed of information for your news reader (sometimes referred to as an aggregator). Your news reader, there are variety to choose from, will show a list of headlines and if you would like can notify you as new press releases are added. One such reader looks something like this, the Sage News Reader.

How do I get started?

It's easy. First of all, you need a newsfeed reader. The reader periodically checks the feed for any new press releases. If it finds something, it simply adds it to your list. You can use a news reader through your browser (like Sage) or you can have a separate program whose only job is to check for news. It can display the latest news as a screensaver, in your menu bar, or almost anywhere you would like. Here is a list to choose from.

Once you have decided on a news reader follow their instructions on how to install and setup the program. To add the Scripps Oceanography Newsfeed you must subscribe. From the homepage, click on the to add the newsfeed to your reader. For most readers you can copy and paste this url http://scrippsnews.ucsd.edu/News_Archives/xmlfeed.php into your reader. If you have questions, please refer to the documentation which came with your reader as each reader functions differently.
